As you ve seen in this chapter, Features and Solutions are the primary methods for adding or extending SharePoint functionality The primary purpose of these is to enable extensions to be added and removed easily from one or more servers (very helpful in a farm) and enabled or disabled via the User Interface (putting the control in the hands of the Site Administrator) As you ve also seen, Features and Solutions are basically the same and use the same setup the difference being that Solutions are typically used for components such as web parts and assemblies, as you will see in detail in s 19 and 20

Lookup Wizard The Lookup Wizard creates a field limited to a list of valid values When you select this data type, a wizard helps you create the list and attaches it to your table You can type in the values you want to use or have the Lookup Wizard consult another table for the set of valid values Then, as you enter table data, you can choose the value you want from a drop-down list The field inherits the same data type as the primary key field in the lookup list, which is the value stored in the lookup field

ne of the key elements in the Windows SharePoint Services platform is the extensibility of the product through the SharePoint Object Model (or Application Programming Interface/API if you prefer) The Object Model exposes all of SharePoint s functionality (the entire User Interface is written against it) and is the main way to extend it There are two ways SharePoint makes it available: the first is a direct connection to a SharePoint site, while the other is via Web Services that use HTTP Both methods (often combined) can be used to extend (or to access) SharePoint from external applications, web components, Event Receivers, and web parts SharePoint s object model is quite extensive and includes several namespaces Unfortunately, many new items for V3 are undocumented; I m hoping that updates to the Software Development Kit (SDK) will fill in the gaps At any rate, because of the sheer size of the model, I wouldn t attempt to document it here even if I could!
